Q: How long have you been a textile artist and teacher?
I began quilting in 1998. I became serious about art quilting around 2004, and began teaching in 2008.
Q: How did you become an expert art quilter and teacher?
I decided I wanted to explore the many techniques and ways to make art quilts. So I began taking a lot of classes with expert teachers like Caryl Bryer Fallert, Hollis Chatelain, Esterita Austin, Melody Johnson and many others. I have studied from books, gone to many quilt shows, entered and competed in many quilt shows, including International Quilt Festival in Houston and Cincinnati. I also learned how to dye fabric from Carol Soderlund and Jan Myers- Newbury. I began teaching at the local Bernina stores here in Raleigh and Chapel Hill. There I learned how to hone my teaching skills and coach my students to make their own exciting art quilts- not just copy other people’s work.
Q: How are you different from other art quilt teachers?
I realize that taking a large group class, one can learn a lot, but nothing beats the one-on-one or small class setting for getting the best results with your students. I really enjoy encouraging each student to create the art that they have always wanted to make, but didn’t know how to start.
I believe everyone has a unique talent. My programs and workshops are designed to help you see your unique gift, and make your dream art quilts.
Q: What kind of personality do you work best with?
I work best with motivated, focused students, who are committed to practicing the necessary skills to become good artists.
Q: What kind of personality do you NOT work best with?
Students who expect me to do the work for them, or are not interested in creating original work. No dabblers or complainers please. I also expect that you will be able to spend at least a few hours a week doing assignments.
Q: How do you work? What can I expect?
First, we will schedule a Get Creative Call to see if this is a good fit for you. I will ask you to think about what you most want out of our working together. If we decide to work together, I will send you by email the supplies you will need and the details of our working together. We will have 9 in person 60 min. coaching sessions, working on your project in my studio. If in person is not possible, I can watch you work by live video conferencing, and critique you that way. You will get weekly PDF lessons via email with action steps to take to start and complete your piece. I will include video if it will be helpful. We can also send pictures and questions via email to each other if you have questions between our in person sessions. The total length of Art Quilting Private Coaching Masterclass is 6 months. I ask that you plan on at least 2 sessions per month, with no longer than 2 weeks break in between. I have found that longer breaks stall the momentum of your learning. Of course, if life emergencies or big family plans come up, we can work around that.
Q: Can I do just one session with you?
One session does not get the job done, unfortunately. If you really want to increase your skill level and get the most of my expertise, you need a minimum of 6 months.
Q: What results can I expect?
- confidence and major improvement in your free-motion quilting skills
- different ways to create your own pattern
- working from a photograph-finished quilt, complete understanding of the whole process
- learning how use paint and thread to create depth and texture
- basic design and composition principles to apply to your work
- how to plan quilt designs and patterns ahead of time
- confidence and skills to use special threads and stitches to enhance your work
- choosing the right fabrics for your piece
- understanding color and value in your work
- exercises that improve your most difficult challenges
- technical info on thread, tensions and needles
- Using all of the above to make a finished piece
- Plus, much more I can’t possibly list in one place depending on your unique needs
Q: Why do I need you? Can’t I just do this on my own?
Sure, but it will take you a lot longer. Why re-invent the wheel? I can teach you in a fraction of the time what it took me years to learn. Plus, I am always learning new things myself, which I then pass on to you. Also, I give you perspective; I will help you see abilities in yourself that you didn’t know were there!
Q: I’m really busy, how much time is involved before I get results?
It is my purpose to empower you to get results right away, from the very first session. That being said, it’s important to tend to your own growth. Delaying your own growth and not investing in your joy, kills your soul a little bit every day. Ask me how I know! With my support and lessons, you will be amazed at how doing a little bit of something you love consistently will feed your soul. If you know this is for you, don’t wait, don’t postpone joy.
Q: How can I get the very best results fast?
Do all the homework I give, and practice, practice, practice- no excuses!
Q: Can I contact other clients you’ve worked with?
Absolutely! Many of them have given me written testimonials which you can read too.
Q: I’ve never invested in myself like this before. How can I justify this expense?
Well, if you really want to make amazing art quilts, but are not sure how to begin, this coaching program will get you going quickly. I have compiled years of study into a do-able program, so, in a very real way, you would be saving money and time by investing in yourself this way. I also get that it is a big investment. However, how many times have you spent money on this and that with little or no results? If you truly want amazing progress and results, you will need to take a bigger step.
Q: If I’m not quite ready, are there other ways to work with you?
Yes, I am presently launching an online classes on the Ruzuko teaching platform.
Q: I have some questions, can I talk with you on the phone?
Yes, just email me to set up a call time at Roxane@roxanelessa.com
Q: I’m not local, but I still want to work with you. How can we do that?
We can use the magic of technology! If you have an iphone, ipad or anything that has Facetime or Skype, we can do live sessions that way. You can also email me pictures of your work in progress and I can critique over the phone. There are many ways around that problem.
Q: What kind of supplies and machines will I need?
Any good sewing machine in working order will do, with darning foot and ability to drop the feed dogs. Also, I would send you a complete list of supplies you will need to gather, most which you will already have.
