Hi Everyone! Happy Holidays!!
This week, I remembered I wanted to add some 3-D texture to my Biltmore quilt. After painstakingly painting the vines and branches, I covered some of them up with twisted yarns. Why, you may ask? Because the vines in real life are so twisted and gnarly looking, I wanted to really highlight that texture in my quilt. Originally, I had folded and twisted some brown fabric to use as vines, but it was too bulky and stiff. Those ended up being cat toys for these two.
Look at how she casually slings her foot over Huey as she is cleaning herself, lol!
Anyway, here’s what is happening now with the yarn, and I like it much better than the flat painted vines. I also like how the painted vines add to the backdrop and bring layers of complexity to the quilt. Right now they are tacked on with acid free fabric glue, but I will hand sew the edges down for stability. Machine stitching would just flatten the yarn, and defeat the purpose of adding yarn in the first place.
It’s really awesome how adding a bit of twisted yarns can add to the realism of the tree.
What do you think? Have you ever tried appliqueing yarns to your project?
