Let me help you turn a photo of your favorite pet into a beguiling art quilt using easy, fused, raw edge applique, and free motion quilting. These make great gifts for family members too! I’m talking about the sparkly ones, the thin ones, the fat ones, the invisible ones, the shiny ones- you get the idea. We will learn about the importance of needle and bobbin tension, types of needles, what threads to use for different effects. You will have confidence when using these wonderful threads. We will make a sampler and practice with different threads. Bring your own: metallics, rayon, variegated, monofilaments, glitter, threads to heavy to go in the needle i.e. Candlelight, Razzle Dazzle for bobbin work.

Fused Applique & Paint Workshop: Morning Glory Pattern
Fused applique is fast, fun and very creative. Applying a little textile paint to add depth to your flower or landscape can be addicting. Here’s a class where you learn how to do both!! In this class, I provide two patterns to choose from and we take off from there. We will cover the basics of fusing fabric, choosing fabrics and colors to make your piece shine, and painting for depth and realism with a little bit of fabric paint. Your fused and painted piece will then be ready for you to quilt on your own.
6 hour workshop
Profab, Jacquard or Setacolor fabric paints , 1/4″ and 1/2″ flat angled brushes, and large plastic bag for covering table are recommended. Paint kits can be provided for a $40 fee. I have extra brushes you can use if you prefer not to buy your own.
Colorplay For Quilters
Finally, the class you’ve been waiting for….calling all quilters, traditional, art quilters, beginners, advanced and everyone in between. We will explore the element of color in designing your quilts by using simple exercises in FABRIC (after all that’s our medium!) First you will learn about value and the importance of it in all your work. We will do some fabric exercises to help you master value. Then you will learn about different color schemes and create 2-3 small abstract fused quilt tops to demonstrate these color schemes. Your confidence in choosing colors for your quilts will be greatly enhanced. Don’t be intimidated by all those colors-take your quilts from boring to gorgeous!

Design Your Own Art Quilt
Have you ever wanted to make an art quilt from a photo, sketch or idea, but don’t know where to start? In this class, we will learn an easy method of transferring your image to a workable pattern. From there, we will work on selecting fabric for your design, and cut and fuse your design onto a background fabric. This is the method I use to make all of my landscape, cityscape and botanical quilts. Once you know this method, it will be like having the keys to the car. You will be able to make any quilt idea you have. No sewing machine will be used, but I can give advice for quilting ideas. This method is suitable for beginners and advanced students as well, so come on, let’s make your art quilt!

Quilting Your Masterpiece
So now you have a beautiful quilt top and it’s all layered and ready to go. Where do you begin? What threads should you use to enhance your work? What tensions and needles should you use for your chosen threads? What kind of quilting patterns should you use for each area of your piece? If you are like me, these are the questions I am always faced with when starting to quilt a new piece. In this class, we will answer all these questions with group and individual instruction. Bring your completed art quilt that is ready to quilt. No need to layer with batting yet, but bring your batting, and backing. Also bring your scraps to make a small practice sandwhich.
Previous free motion quilting experience is a must!
