Happy New Year

Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year!

I discovered I had sold or given away many of my mid and small size pieces, so it’s time to add to the inventory for shows in the New Year.

So I have started a new needle felted landscape. The siren call of Hawaii still calls to me, and I must answer. I have many gorgeous photos of my trip to Kauai, and I plan to continue using them for inspiration. Here’s a gorgeous vista with a lighthouse.

There’s even a sea bird in flight!  I wanted to work quickly and spontaneously without a pattern. So I pulled the colors I saw from my wool roving collection and grabbed a needle and foam. I cut out a piece of wool batting to attach the fibers to, and began laying out the blocks of color I saw.

At this point the fibers are all loose, not attached to the batting. Using the barbed needle, I punched the fibers into the foam to attach them. I also used a multi needle tool to speed up the process. Also to speed things up, I used my Baby Lock Embellisher machine to further punch down the fibers. I intentionally didn’t punch them down flat since I wanted a looser look to the piece.

Once the fibers were attached, I put my round clear foot on my Bernina and dropped the feed dogs- next step- free motion quilting!  I use that foot so the fibers don’t get caught in the regular darning foot.  I like to use heavier threads so they show more against the wool fibers.

I may put a border around the whole piece to frame it and then a binding. We’ll see….
