Welcome to the new readers!
The Christmas Commission is almost done! Let me catch you up. This week I put all the finishing touches on the painting, and completed the quilting. OH and made my very own Charlie Brown Xmas tree with branches from the woods and lights.
I do love the lights this time of year, but Teeny would eat them if I made them readily accessible on a real tree indoors. Also, woe betide any ornaments and the tree itself would probably be knocked over. She is like a toddler with claws!
Anyway, after layering with my wool batting and a nice hand dye for the back, I choose my threads to compliment the colors. These are mostly Superior Threads I have collected at quilt shows over the years when they are in the sale bin.
I kept the quilting fairly minimal on the faces using Monopoly clear thread.
Her beads were sewn on the back side with heavy white sparkle thread in the bobbin. After working on the faces, I began the clothes and the background, working outward from the center. The background is what I call a stream of consciousness quilting using various motifs I have learned over the years. So no marking ahead of time.
After damp blocking on the wall, I trimmed up the edges carefully, so it would be square, adding an extra 3/8″ to fill the binding. I always cut a 2 1/2″ binding strip to make the bindings. That makes an good scant 3/8″ binding. I wanted a good durable edge finish since this will be a family heirloom.
And here is a good shot of the back with all the quilting visible:
I’m pleased with the way it is turning out so far. And here is Huey who has commandeered the thread bowl, reminding me that lunch is late.
Also, this week I went to an open house of my fellow artist Marina Bosetti, whose work I have long admired. Here are some of her fabulous pieces.
I, of course, love this kitchen backsplash with the two grey kitties and the little squirrels. Who do they remind you of??
Please let me know if you have any questions about the process- I would be happy to answer them. And if you would like me to create a one of a kind textile painting for you or your family just shoot me an email. I am scheduling commissions now for 2018.
Thank you for reading this year, and have a blessed Holiday season!
