3 Common Myths About Dyeing Fabric

Hi Everyone! A big welcome to all the new readers!

3 Common Myths About Dyeing Fabric

Anyone who knows me, knows I love these 2 things: Dyeing Fabric and The Beach.  So, when I got invited to teach dyeing in Leland, NC by my friends Joyce and Alice, I said, hell yeah!

Now these gals have always wanted to learn to dye, so they didn’t need any convincing.  But what about the rest of you? Have you ever thought about dyeing your own fabric?

C’mon, tell the truth- you know you have!

But I’m guessing that these 3 things are stopping you:

  1. Time
  2. Fear
  3. Mess/trouble

No I can’t read minds.  I just know that’s what stopped me from trying one of the most rewarding and fun things I now do.

Back in 2008, I learned from the master, Carol Soderlund, who taught me the scientific way to dye.

Anyway, time.  In just 1 day, we mixed our dyes and dyed at least 10 yards of luscious fabric using various methods.

Fear and Mess/Trouble.  For me, these two are related. Since the time we were little, we were told to stay clean, don’t make a mess, and don’t stain anything.  Well, for heaven’s sake, that’s what dyeing is- staining fabric!  Hopefully in a way we will like  :).

Yes, there are drips and spills, but when you lay rags down and cover with a large painter’s plastic sheet, you can keep it to a minimum.  Yes, you order your dyes and PFD fabric from Pro Chemical and Dye  ( and they are having a sale on dye right now!) or Dharma Trading Co.   You’ll also need Soda Ash to fix the dyes, which you can get at a pool supply place or Walmart.  Then save your water bottles and large yogurt containers, grab some buckets and then let the fun begin!

Two great books that will get you started are:

Ann Johnston’s Dyeing By Accidentand Freida Anderson’s Fabric to Dye For.  They give all the recipes you will need.  Speaking of recipes, if you can cook, you can dye fabric.  That’s how easy it is.  Really!  And the results last longer too!

If you still chose not to dye fabric, that’s ok too.  Those of us who do will be happy to sell you ours!
