3 Surefire Ways to End a Creative Slump
So the Holidays are long gone, and you’re in a bit of a mood. Winter blahs, or whatever. You may finally have a little time to yourself, but your creative juice is nowhere to be found. What’s a quilty gal to do?
Ya know, I’ve been there and done that, so I have a few suggestions:
- Find and/or buy the most beautiful fabric you can find. Fondle it and let your imagination run wild. Cut it into slices and just piece it with other co-ordinating fabrics. Throw in a zinger ( a fabric that looks a little odd). Piece and cut, piece and cut, until you get some beautiful combos. Arrange on your design wall and just play.
- Choose your 3 favorite colors and pull fabrics from your stash. Then pull 1 neutral fabric. Decide on a theme, poem, or piece of music that fits those fabrics and just go crazy with them. You can go traditional or abstract, whatever your fancy is.
- Sign up for an online class or an in person class and learn something new with a teacher you love. Get out there in the online community- it’s fun to work with quilters from around the world.
Major words of advice: don’t judge what you have made. Just get carried away with the process of making. Find the joy of making again without beating yourself up if you like it or not, if it’s any good or not.
I know, easier said than done. But if you can do that, I promise a happy time in your work room/studio. And it may just loosen you up, and get those juices flowing again.
This week I am sewing those yummy strips of Kaffe fabric together to help me with MY creative slump! What has helped you get things going again after a slump?
Posh, Pet Portraits
Don’t forget enroll into my new Posh, Pet Portraits class I am teaching at Bernina World of Sewing, Raleigh, NC, ! Some of you will remember a while back, I detailed the making of my posh pet, Huey, my kitten. You can read about it here.
If you have ever thought about doing a portrait in fabric of your past or present pet, this is your opportunity. This is a 2 day class, on two Saturdays (Feb. 13 & 27). The two weeks in between will give you time to work on your project. The cool thing about this class is not only will you get a fab portrait of your pet, but you will also get tips on free motion quilting while you work on your project. And the same techniques can be used to create other art quilts such as landscapes, seascapes, buildings, flowers, people, etc. You can bring your own machine to class or use a class machine ( a nice BERNINA 350!) Also, you get 10% off your class supplies at the store. So if you are local, don’t wait to register, space is very limited. Call 919-782-2945 to register. Better yet, do it with a friend!
The Needle Felting Flower video IS ready. So if you haven’t seen it and want to get your free pattern- just email me and I’ll send it your way. See below.
