Hi Everyone! A big welcome to all the new readers!
Improv Your Scraps!
I hope you enjoyed my 3 part series on entering your work in shows. If you didn’t get to read it, they are in the archives for the last 3 posts. They will give you a good overview of the process.
This week I decided to switch gears and do some improv scrap piecing, ala Rayna Gilman, who was also one of the teachers in the Fiber Art Connection with me. I’ve done this sort of thing before, but this time I was more intentional by creating sets of strips sewn together first.
I do think it helps to gather both lights and darks, patterns and solids, and a limited palette of colors to create a unified look.
I also used “ugly” fabric and fabrics I liked, since I was cutting mostly narrow strips. If I liked the fabric, I cut them wider so they would show more.
Needless to say, this activity is fun, a scrap user-upper, and instantly gratifying. There are no rules, and you are only sewing straightish seams.
And- best part– no measuring, no rulers, no 1/4″ seams. Just some occasional trimming to make sewing the seams easier.
These will be quilted simply with straight lines, bound and made into some placemats. Just think, if you did this on a regular basis, your scraps would be used up and you would have lots of gifts to give!
The Needle Felting Flower video IS ready. So if you haven’t seen it and want to get your free pattern- just email me and I’ll send it your way. See below.
