I have been working for a few days on the Biltmore quilt. Quilting….quilting…..quilting….
It’s hard to see how much quilting has been done on the front.
But when you turn it over, you can really see the work:
I have been mostly been using my Superior trilobal polyester threads and some Sulky blend-able cottons. So far I have not had to change my needle once. Still using the same Titanium Topstich 14 I started with, because those suckers last for 64 hours of quilting!
Another detail. I am slowly marching up the quilt, outlining the branches and the beams of this fabulous trellis.
I often wonder why I go through the trouble to make quilts like these. I recently heard something from Matt Kahn, a spiritual teacher, that answered my question. (Watch this video from Matt). It is to honor and remind us of the power and glory of the Universe and the Divine’s presence in nature. Why? So that we remember to ask for help from the Universe when we most need it. Which for me, is most of the time, let’s face it. If the Universe or the Divine can make something as beautiful and awe inspiring as this wisteria tree, imagine what it can do through us if we only ask for It’s help?
So there it is, in a nutshell. Why I make art, teach others to make art. To remind myself and other artists that we can be our best selves if only we try not to do everything ourselves. Art at it’s best inspires and uplifts us all, and I am so humbled and grateful that I get to be the channel for making and teaching my art forms.
And thank you for reading and being a witness to my work!
