Welcome to the new readers!
I do love silk, and I love to paint on silk. I love the process, the sheen of the fabric- everything about it. It’s very meditative and I can do it for hours. Once I recovered from my trip, I looked through some of the orchid pictures from S.F. Which one to choose? So many good ones!
I finally choose one for it’s gorgeous color and got to work creating a composition. I decided to go big! I choose a horizontal composition with 3 joined panels.
I really like those areas of curly texture, so I decided to use them as unifying element. In the end I flipped the ends and made them less wide to make them less important than the center.
From this I made my freezer paper pattern, and ironed my silk charmeuse onto the waxy part. Now came the fun part! I used my Derwent Ink sticks to outline the petals of the flower. Earlier I had tried a small flower using the ink sticks but decided the end result looked too heavy. I had another idea up my sleeve. Several years ago, Marlene Glickman had gifted me with a packet of silk dyes. So I experimented with those on a scrap. I liked the luminosity of the dyes, which didn’t remove any of the sheen of the silk, like the ink sticks did.
But how to control the bleeding? I tried aloe vera gel and Golden fabric medium and decided the gel worked pretty well. So in the areas I needed more control, I mixed the dyes with the gel. In the areas where I needed to blend I just used water- very carefully! Going from lightest colors to dark just like a watercolorist, I slowly built my flower, layer by layer.
