Big Bass Bob- who’s that?

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

I have been commissioned to make a fish quilt.  Not just any fish- has to be a big bass fish. But here’s the back story….
My boyfriend is an avid bass fisherman. He has fished with his buddy, Bob for 20 + years.  As a result I have learned way more than I bargained for about bass fishing, :).  Well, as a gift to his buddy, he asked me to make him an art quilt that documents his love for bass fishing.  Also, I needed to include his new nickname: Big Bass Bob, or Triple B for short.  And the year 2018- his best year to date. I am happy to create this memento for these two  buddies because of the love it represents. Love of the sport, and love for each other.  So here are some quick progress shots:
My mock up using several photos:

The bass fish made from hand dyed cotton, black markers, sheers and satin and Shiva Paintsticks to get the belly white. I made the fish separately so I could do the background first, instead of having to quilt all around him.

Here’s the background, using a single piece of hand dyed cotton and other batiks fused on top. I prefused the batiks, and did a lot of fussy cutting to make it look rough and full of vegetation.

I’ve already done a lot of the background quilting and the lettering stitching. The lettering was done on just the brown fabric with stabilizer on the back, so as not to pucker the whole quilt. I used a gold shiny polyester thread and marked the fabric first with Saral or Transdoodle. Then I  free motion stitched over with several passes to get the thickness of the letters.

The quilt before stitching. I plan to add some yarn couched on the logs and here and there to give it some realistic texture.

I’m having fun with this little project and Teeny aka Gracie is keeping a watchful eye over the process…

If you need help with your quilting project, just remember I am available for 1 hour sessions by video chat or in person. Just shoot me an email and we can set up a time:

Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint details for depth and realism on your quilts?

If the answer is yes, read on.  My popular Painted & Fused Morning Glory class is going to be offered online  to the general public for the first time.  I have taught this class many times and each time I’m awed at the fabulous results everyone gets, with each flower being slightly different.

This class is open for registration and is only $39.00!

And you can do it at your own pace in your own house, in your jammies, without running around.  All lessons will be available to you at the same time, in case you get inspired and want to work fast.

Here is the linky thingy to register:

And, you will learn all the techniques I used to paint my latest landscape art quilt….

I am opening up my It’s Elemental! online class.  But there’s still time to get on board. It’s 8 weeks and only $97 and includes a group live video session. This may be the last time I am offering this class, and it’s perfect for newbies who want to get a crash course in design and composition.  Here’s the link to find out about it and enroll;

If you want to take a class with me- CALL ME at 919-602-2260.   I can teach for a small group of your friends, like I did a while back for my friend Joyce Marks and her quilting buddies.  We had a blast and I tailored the classes to her group’s interests.

And you can always take an online class with me- see below!

Here’s what one guild VP had to say recently:

I’m usually Johnny on the Spot but missed the boat last week re these BIG THANKS.  Loved your presentation. Heard very positive and supportive remarks from the guests…thank you again for the well-defined and creative presentation.  Look forward to seeing you again.
