The Fun Doesn’t Go Away!

Hi Everyone! A big welcome to all the new readers!

The Fun Doesn’t Go Away!

One of my private coaching students had a session with me yesterday.  She has been working with me for over a year now. I have seen tremendous growth in her work, her confidence, and courage to try new things.  It’s been such a joy to be part of this growth.  She said something that I wasn’t expecting.

You see, one of my core values as a teacher of art quilting is that you must know the nuts and bolts of how art is made.  And of how we see things, or perceive things, more accurately.  Once you have a working knowledge of design elements and principles, and are able to practice good design, you are no longer floundering about.  I stress this in every lesson with my private students, and all of my students, really. So here’s what she said:

I thought that working this way would take away the fun, the spontaneity.  That I would get all caught up in doing it “right”, as opposed “to flying by the seat of my pants.”

And that got me thinking.  I bet a lot of quilters feel that way.

But then, here came the surprise: she then said,  the fun didn’t go away.

And along with that, her confidence in the quality of her work increased.  She actually was enjoying using these tools to create her unique art quilts.  And she’s getting more work accepted into shows.  And she’s selling more work.  And she’s now working on not just 1, but 3 series of new works.  I know she won’t mind my bragging on her, because she is just as proud as she can be, too.  Here’s her FB page so you can check her out:   Susan
