Hi Everyone! A big welcome to all the new readers! Guess what? I have readers from:
Isn’t that just crazy awesome? What’s new with you? Making anything tasty in the studio? Here’s what’s happening chez moi…..
Remember this guy from last week?
Celebration, 15″ x 15″, fused cotton hand dyes & batiks, 2014
This week I got to dive into the quilting and here it is blocking on the wall. I used a combo of feed dogs up straight lines and feed dogs down free motion. I think my choices help the movement of the piece. How would you have quilted it? I ended up using an envelope finish to finish the edges. I may mount it on a canvas or use a rod pocket- I’m not sure yet…..I like the look of canvas but I like the convenience of being able to roll it up.
A lot of you get stuck at the quilting phase of design, and I want to remind you of a cool trick I learned and adapted. I teach this in all my classes and private coaching sessions to help lesson the fear, and uncertainty that pops up whenever we go to quilt something we care about.
I found a roll of clear plastic at Joann’s and I lay it over the quilt top, get out my markers and go crazy on it. I try out patterns and colors without marking my top. When I’m done I just wipe it clean for next time :).
Here’s what my quilting map looks like:
Whenever I forget where I am, I just refer to my quilting map. Try it out on one of your UFO’s and see if it doesn’t make your life easier!
And don’t forget the
SUNDAY ART QUILTING SALON
is coming up soon. Reserve your spot NOW before I run out of space.
If you would like some help with designing your own art quilt or are stuck with a UFO, bring it along to the next Sunday Salon. It will be July 13th from 1-4 pm. Get some one-on-one coaching, and group advice from the other artists. And let’s not forget, you can now buy gorgeous fabric for your art work at Cary Quilting Co. during the salon. Last time I was there I saw some beautiful batiks!

Did You Know? That I am on Pinterest? Did you know that there are many amazing art quilts and traditional quilts being pinned every day, just waiting for you to look at? Never before has so much inspiration been in one place. It’s like having an art museum in your hands. If you haven’t checked it out, there are many, many types of things being pinned. It’s super easy to get started. You can take a look at my pins, which are organized on different “boards” HERE. CUSTOM COMMISSIONS And don’t forget, I make custom commissions too! Read what my client Glenda had to say about her custom commission experience: “Normally, I would be anxious about commissioning someone to do a work of art such as this. However, I felt a connection to you when Leigh showed me your work. It resonated with me and when I met you, you seemed almost a personification of your work. I immediately felt comfortable with you and knew that what you would create would be stunning. And it is!” About Roxane Roxane is a full time studio textile artist and teacher with two girls and 1 fat cat. She is a 2012 Niche Award Winner and exhibits her work all over the world.
