Hi Everyone! A big welcome to all the new readers! What’s new? The pool opened and we have been swimming and hiking around the lake. I’ve got a new program in the works, which I will not go into here, but stay tuned….
Last week I finally got to dive into color. YAY! I now know as a result of doing this class with Elizabeth Barton, that I prefer the kind of abstraction that is more than just shapes. It’s about the emotion of color. I like my color to be evocative of a certain mood or feeling. With this little study, I felt celebration.
So I used the oranges to express that feeling. I also love the cool greens and aquas to offset that riotous orange. I decided the focal point was going to be the big curl. So I used a really dark blue against the bright orange to create maximum contrast in value. Everything else then became subordinate to that, in terms of contrast in value and color. When you know what you want to achieve, it’s sooooo much easier to choose fabrics. Here’s what I chose:
Celebration, 15″ x 15″, fused cotton hand dyes & batiks, 2014
I can’t wait to add the quilting to this fun little piece! Have you ever used this approach to designing abstract work?
If you’d like more help with this aspect of design, please come to the….

CUSTOM COMMISSIONS And don’t forget, I make custom commissions too! Read what my client Glenda had to say about her custom commission experience: “Normally, I would be anxious about commissioning someone to do a work of art such as this. However, I felt a connection to you when Leigh showed me your work. It resonated with me and when I met you, you seemed almost a personification of your work. I immediately felt comfortable with you and knew that what you would create would be stunning. And it is!” About Roxane Roxane is a full time studio textile artist and teacher with two girls and 1 fat cat. She is a 2012 Niche Award Winner and exhibits her work all over the world.
