Working on a New Commission

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

It’s the season of bare trees and cold winds. We had a huge super moon this week which hung low and orange in the horizon as it rose. I am so inspired by Nature and this season is no different.  Although I don’t like cold weather and short dark days, there is something so soothing about the way it makes me want to turn inward and reflect on the past year. Do you feel the same?

This year I have been blessed my many people and many gifts, by travels to Hawaii and San Fransisco, by many children I have taught the joy of dance, and by the many dances I have participated in myself. And let’s not forget the joy of making textile art!

Right now I am working on a commission for a friend of mine who shares the love of dance. His parents just had their 70th wedding anniversary! And so to celebrate their love of dancing and their remarkable marriage, I am creating a portrait of them dancing together.   I am using a photo taken when they were actually dancing. Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone- this is my first human portrait!

I am using the same time honored method I have used for other projects.

1- make a freezer paper pattern by tracing the outlines of the subject and enlarging with my projector.

2- select fabrics that play well together and put fusible web on the backs.  Remember to always fuse first, then cut out for clean edges.

3- create a background to applique the faces onto.

4- paint the faces. I used Profab textile paints and Derwent Inktense Blocks with Golden Textile medium.

5- cut out and apply the the faces, clothing, etc. and fuse them to the background.

Her hair is made of two layers of white silk charmeuse fused together.

6- continue adding paint to create shadows and heat set the paint.

The swirly background was made by appliqueing the pieces from the top with invisible thread- so no raw edges.

This is where I am at now. I am ready to add the wool batting and start the quilting. It’s gotta be ready for Christmas, so off I go to work.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the process- I would be happy to answer them. And if you would like me to create a one of a kind textile painting for you or your family just shoot me an email. I am scheduling commissions now for 2018.

Thank you for reading this year, and have a blessed Holiday season!

If the answer is yes, read on.  My popular Painted & Fused Morning Glory class is going to be offered online  to the general public for the first time.  I have taught this class many times and each time I’m awed at the fabulous results everyone gets, with each flower being slightly different.

Would you like to work with me one on one? Maybe you would like to make original work, show it and perhaps sell it?

This has actually happened for my client Susan!

Susan has just let me know, she sold this quilt! Congratulations, Susan!

One of my private clients, Susan, has had her quilt, “Nature Takes Back Her Own”,  that was accepted into the prestigious Houston IQA World of Beauty Show.
